Husker baseball hits two home runs in first inning against No. 21 Baylor

WACO, Texas — Nebraska hit a pair of two-run home runs in the top of the first inning and stayed in control the rest of the way as the Huskers rolled past 21st-ranked Baylor 12-4 on Friday.

Angelo Altavilla and Luke Roskam hit the two-run homers, and that was just the beginning to big nights for the Husker duo.

Altavilla added a three-run home run in the ninth to give five RBis on the night. Roskam, meanwhile finished with a career-high four hits, scored twice and drove in four runs.

Husker starting pitcher Matt Waldron was sharp as he earned his second win this season. The Omaha Westside graduate struck out a career-high eight as he allowed one earned run and seven hits over seven innings. He didn’t walk anyone.

Thanks to the first-inning home runs, NU led 4-1 through four innings. The Huskers then tacked on three more in the fifth as Joe Acker capped that rally with a two-run double.

In the eighth, Papio South grad Aaron Palensky hit an RBI triple and scored on Roskam’s single. The next inning, Altavilla hit his three-run bomb to right-center.

Acker and Palensky finished with two hits apiece as the 12 runs were the most Nebraska (5-6) has scored in a game since opening the season with 21 against UC Riverside.

The Huskers and Bears will continue their three-game series on 3:05 p.m. on Saturday.
