UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Nate Fisher and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as Nebraska edged Penn State 3-1 to sweep a Saturday doubleheader.
The Huskers (20-10, 10-2 Big Ten), who won the first game 4-2, also swept the three-game series against the Nittany Lions (17-15, 1-10). It was the Huskers’ first three-game conference road sweep since 2016.
The sweep also kept the Huskers atop the Big Ten standings, with Indiana (7-2) in second place. The Huskers have won seven of eight and six straight conference games.
Fisher struck out six in five innings, Mike Waldron followed with three scoreless innings to pick up his second win and Shay Schanaman pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. Waldron and Schanaman combined to retire the last 11 Penn State batters.
Spencer Schwellenbach and Aaron Palensky each had a pair of hits for the Huskers, who stranded nine runners.
With the score tied 1-1, the Huskers broke through in the eighth against reliever Kyle Virbitsky.
After loading the bases with one out, Joe Acker scored on a passed ball. Cam Chick followed with a sacrifice fly.
Reece Eddins struck out six while matching a career-best with seven innings pitched in the first game. He scattered eight hits and allowed two runs.
Eddins recorded his fourth consecutive start of at least five innings and matched his effort on March 31, when he went seven innings in a loss to Minnesota.
Robbie Palkert and Colby Gomes held the Nittany Lions scoreless over the final two innings, with Gomes earning his sixth save.
Gomes, a Millard West grad who started at first base before moving to the mound in the ninth, was 2 for 4 and drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the sixth.
Angelo Altavilla led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on Chick’s groundout.
Gomes worked the count full against starter Eric Mock and drove the next pitch to left field to score Altavilla.
The Huskers tacked on an insurance run on Altavilla’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Huskers will play a pair of midweek nonconference games before traveling to Iowa next weekend.
The Huskers will host Kansas State on Tuesday and before playing UNO at Werner Park on Wednesday.
