Four-run third inning propels Purdue by Nebraska softball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue erased Nebraska’s 3-2 lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning Friday on the way to a 9-4 Big Ten victory.

The 29-15 Boilermakers, who improved to 6-6 in conference play, had four hits and took advantage of one of Nebraska’s three errors to grab a 6-3 lead in the third.

Purdue’s Mallory Baker hit two home runs that produced five RBIs. The first came off starter Olivia Ferrell in the second inning for a 2-0 Purdue lead. Baker’s second homer was a three-run blast in the sixth off Courtney Wallace.

Alyvia Simmons drove in two runs for NU while Madi Unzicker scored a run and drove one it.

Purdue starter Kaitlynn Moody improved to 10-6. Ferrell is 3-5 as the Huskers prepare for a Saturday doubleheader with the Boilermakers beginning at 2 p.m.

Nebraska dropped to 2-8 in Big Ten play with its fifth straight loss. The Huskers have been outscored 38-7 in those five games.
