Former Husker golf coach Larry Romjue dies at age 80

LINCOLN – Retired Husker golf coach Larry Romjue died Tuesday at age 80.

There will be no public memorial service.

Romjue, a 1960 NU graduate and lifetime member of the PGA of America, coached the men’s golf team from 1970 to 2001 and the women’s squad from 1975 to 1979. His best team was in 1999, when the Husker men were Big 12 runners-up and finished a school-best 14th at the NCAA Championships.

He was the school’s first coach in women’s golf and took the Huskers to the Big Eight title in 1976, when they qualified for the AIAW Championships. They were runners-up the next year at the AIAW Region Six meet in 1977.

Romjue was born in Marshalltown, Iowa. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1956 and NU in 1960, then served as an Army officer until 1965. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; son Chip; daughters Beth Schott and Kit Jennings; and brothers Edwin and Milt.
