LINCOLN — Nebraska will travel to Mississippi State for a first-round NIT game after the Huskers received a No. 5 seed for the 32-team tournament.

NU (22-10) will be playing in the NIT for the 18th time, more than any Big Ten program. The Huskers were the NIT champions in 1996.

Nebraska was clinging to NCAA hopes going into Sunday after finishing with a 13-5 Big Ten record and tying for fourth in the league. The Huskers, however, were not able to claim their first NCAA bid since 2014.

No. 4-seeded Mississippi State is 22-11 and went 9-9 in the Southeastern Conference this season. Eight SEC teams were picked for the 68-team NCAA field, compared to four from the Big Ten.

The date and time for the first-round game were not immediately announced.
