After quick start, Huskers finish tied with No. 23 Rutgers

LINCOLN — Nebraska got off to a quick start before finishing with a 1-1 tie against No. 23 Rutgers on Sunday at Barbara Hibner Stadium.

Senior Haley Hanson, who scored twice in the second half of Thursday’s win over Maryland, gave Nebraska (8-3-3) a quick lead as she scored in the seventh minute.

Hanson, who has a team-high eight goals this season, scored on a breakaway, kicking the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

But Rutgers (9-2-3), which had lost 1-0 at Iowa on Thursday, squared the game in the first five minutes of the second half when Nneka Moneme scored from 20 yards out.

Nebraska had possession most of the game as it outshot Rutgers 18-6. The Huskers didn’t allow the Scarlet Knights to attempt a shot in the first half.

Nebraska goalkeeper Aubrei Corder made two saves on the day.

The Huskers are 2-0-3 in their past five games. They have allowed a total of three goals in those five games.

Nebraska will play its next four games on the road. That stretch begins Thursday at Purdue.
