WWI Memorial Instigates Drive For Falls City Park Renovation

FALLS CITY - Falls City Councilman Don Ferguson said the proposed renovation of Legion Park got its start from the idea of establishing a World War I memorial. He said his friend and former councilman Don Baldwin suggested the idea for the memorial and he agreed to help. November of 2018 is the 100-year anniversary of the World War I Armistice, so the first step in this is we want to honor those veterans and we’re working with some private citizens and the VFW to put up a nice war memorial.” A new flag station would be incorporated with limestone features honoring each branch of service. The proposed renovation also includes construction of a new, regulation-sized basketball court and improved field for practicing baseball. The bathrooms that were removed about a year ago would also be replaced. Ferguson said a campaign is underway to raise $60,000 to get construction on the memorial ready for next spring. Ferguson: “It’s very realistic. Our goals are not that lofty. Part number two was the tennis court was dilapidated and at one time the city park board thought of tearing it up and making it into a green area, when constituents and a few friends mine came to me and said why don’t we put an outdoor basketball facility there, so these kids have a place to play in the summer time. Ferguson: “We have one existing now at Grandview Park. Sometimes it gets congested and some kids aren’t old enough to drive down there, so they have to ride bikes or walk. It would be nice to have a second one and this is the perfect place for it.” He said the city will contribute the lights and fencing for the basketball court and will provide drinking water for a new seating are. Donations can be made to the Richardson Foundation, dropped off at the F&M Bank drop off or mailed to Ferguson.
