Winter Storm Blanketing Southern Nebraska

KEARNEY - The first major snowfall of the season is hitting Nebraska. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, Furnas and Harlan counties until 6 p.m. Thursday. NWS officials say 4 to 6" inches of snow has already fallen in a band from Cambridge to Arapahoe to Holdrege and Minden. They say another 1-3" inches of snow is possible Thursday, leaving 5-9" of snow in some parts of south central Nebraska. The Department of Roads is saying roads are slick near Lexington, Holdrege and Minden. Snow is also covering roads further north in towns like Broken Bow and Thedford. Rescue officials have responded to multiple accidents in the Kearney, Grand Island and Central City areas. U.S. Highway 30 was closed Thursday morning in both directions due to an accident. Another accident shut down I-80 eastbound near Grand Island. A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of the rest of southern Nebraska, which could see 2-3" of snow by Thursday evening.
