Tyler Hodges sees girls wrestling being implemented next season

NEBRASKA CITY – High school girls wrestling is one voting session away from becoming a Nebraska School Activities Association sanctioned sport – the closest it’s ever been.

It’ll take 60 percent approval from the NSAA Representative Assembly during their meeting in April. During second-stage voting at the legislative district meetings in January, four of the six districts voted for girls wrestling to be considered for sanctioning.

The Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association announced in early January it will hold a girls high school state tournament for the first time this season.

Nebraska City Public Schools organized a successful high school and junior high girls program two years ago with their own practices, tournaments and matches.

Head Coach Tyler Hodges, who has been a big advocate for girls wrestling since the discussions began, says there’s no reason why it shouldn’t pass the final vote.

“We’re getting a lot of girls that come from families of wrestlers, whether their brothers were wrestlers or dads were wrestlers. We’re fortunate the girls that we have out have been exposed to it before. I could see – just from talking with some of the girls in our halls – as soon as it becomes an official sport, I bet we’ll pick up another 10 girls pretty easily.”

Nebraska City Athletic Director Matt Koehler also supports the idea and said he will continue to vote to make girls wrestling an NSAA sanctioned sport.

Female wrestler Taylor Moyer was honored with the rest of her teammates during Senior Night on Thursday before the Pioneers hosted Mt. Michael Benedictine. She finished her season with a 13-0 record.

Nebraska City defeated Mt. Michael, 54-24, with wins from Hayden Schalk, Reid Stracke, Jorge Loarca, Lee Hobbs, Josh DeLunger, Chris Adams, Chance Sjulin, Jordan Moyer, Zach Benton and Jaydin Aldana.

The Pioneers compete in the B-1 District Tournament on Feb. 8 and 9 at Platteview High School. Plattsmouth will also participate.
