The heavy, wet snow of this weekend’s storm caused some problems for travelers across southeastern Nebraska, but it was just right for the kids.
As much as 14 inches of snow fell at Sterling, in southeast Nebraska’s Johnson County. Lincoln snow totals ranged from about 4 to 6 inches. In the Omaha metro area generally ranged from 2.5 inches to 4.5 inches
Other Nebraska totals reported to the weather service: 13 inches northwest of Nebraska City; 10 inches at Nebraska City; 9 inches at Firth and Dunbar; 8.5 inches at Panama; 8 inches at Cortland, Villisca, Swanton, Fairbury and Palmyra; 2 inches at the weather service office in Valley.
Ssnowfall began Friday evening, but the warmer ground initially melted it, weather service meteorologist David Eastlack said.
The rest of the weekend should bring somewhat higher temperatures, with Sunday’s highs reaching the low to mid-30s and Monday’s reaching the upper 30s.
The rest of the week is expected to stay dry and sunny until Friday, which could bring more snow and a high near 25, said meteorologist Brian Barjenbruch.
Barjenbruch said the weekend snow was perfect for building snowmen but also weighed down power lines and tree branches.
The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Transportation tweeted updates on road conditions throughout the day, reminding commuters to make way for road plows and to “Know before you go” by checking Nebraska 511 before using the roads.
“Watch for our law enforcement partners such as @NEStatePatrol, our plows and tow truck drivers as we all work to make the roads safer. Your safety is our business!” said one Nebraska DOT tweet.
