LINCOLN - During a series of proclamations, Lieutenant Governor Mike Foley helped make the announcement that September is now Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It certainly meant a lot to Norfolk's Jamie Wichman.
"Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. My son, Nicholas, was diagnosed at age 15 with Osteosarcoma, and eight short months later, we lost him. Now, I fight in his memory for better achievements for these children that are diagnosed everyday."
Also on hand to accept the award was Executive Director of Sammy's Superheroes Foundation, Jeremy Stanislav.
The organization looks to raise awareness for childhood cancer research.
"One thing that we have found over the years is that there is a lot of good research. It's just being underfunded. There's not enough money and funds going toward childhood cancer research. So what we want to do is find those doctors, find those researchers that are going to find different ways of treating childhood cancer and help move the needle. Hopefully, that will lead to modern treatments, and a cure."
