NEBRASKA CITY - Otoe County Judge John Steinheider gave a Nebraska City man charged with sexual assault of two children more time to hire a lawyer after the Otoe County Public Defender’s Office bowed out.
Public Defender Michael Ziskey asked the judge to be released from the case involving 51-year-old Troy Rakes, saying his law firm is already representing the mother of one of the alleged victims. He told the court that further representation of Rakes would pose a conflict of interest.

Rakes is charged with sexual abuse over a nine-year period. Prosecutors say the girls were ages 4 and 6 when the abuse began.
The judge continued Rakes' preliminary hearing until Dec. 11. Bond continues at $500,000.
