Psychiatric Examination Ordered For Double Murder Suspect

NEBRASKA CITY – Judge Robert Wester ordered a psychiatric examination of a man accused of the premeditated murder of a Douglas couple in March.

Public Defender Michael Ziskey questioned 36-year-old Brindar Jangir’s competency to stand trial.

Ziskey: “Based on conversations with Mr. Jangir, as well as recent events, we do have concerns about Mr. Jangir’s mental status, particularly his ability to cope with the stress of the proceedings.”

Sheriff deputies discovered the bodies of Randal and Annette Grimes  after responding to a 9-1-1 call at the residence. Jangir was later arrested in California.

Although the court has sealed Jangir’s arrest affidavit, an Associated Press report said the Sioux City man’s former girlfriend told investigators he threatened to kill her and her family if she ever left him.

Following Friday’s hearing, some family members who had been present in the court when Jangir appeared on the monitor,  complained to prosecutors that Jangir had made offensive hand gestures during portions of the court hearing.
