LINCOLN - The crowd quickly grew outside of the capital building, Tuesday, in protest of the return of the death penalty in Nebraska.
In response to the execution of Carey Dean Moore, somewhere near a hundred people showed up, paying full attention to those who spoke denouncing the act.
Conservatives who oppose capital punishment, such as State Sen. Patty Pansing and religious leaders were among those who spoke to the group.
Protest organizer Matt Moly works with Nebraskans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. He explained what message the protesters wanted their government to hear.
"It cost the millions of dollars more than life without parole, every year. Those are resources that could be better spent by law enforcement to keep our communities safe."
Matt also explained that the process weighs heavily on the victim's families and there are possible risks associated with sentencing someone to death.
As rush hour traffic passed by the protest, it was hard not to notice protesters. Some honked their horns others gave a thumbs up.
The protest wrapped up about 6. However, some did stay after to speak amongst themselves.
At no point during the gathering did any counter-protesters challenge the group.
As of now, there is no word of any future events, according to Nebraskans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty.
