OMAHA, NE (Omaha World-Herald News Source) – Omaha Public Schools leaders asked lawmakers Tuesday to explore having the state take over management of the district’s troubled pension system as a small step toward resolving the fund’s $771 million shortfall.
OPS is the only school district in Nebraska and one of few in the country with its own pension system. School officials say that’s created a huge burden on district taxpayers.
According to the Omaha World-Herald members of the Legislature’s Retirement Systems Committee told the district that they may be willing to help going forward but that getting rid of the huge shortfall will be OPS’ problem to solve on their own.
