Omaha police recover trailer used to haul youth athletic program equipment

OMAHA, NE (Omaha World-Herald News Source) – A stolen trailer belonging to an Omaha police athletic league for at-risk youngsters has been recovered.

The 2015 6-by-12-foot black box trailer, valued at $2,500, was loaded with $1,500 worth of chalk used to line ballfields when it was taken from near 36th and Q Streets on Saturday, said Police Sgt. Terry Cabral.

“We got everything back,” Cabral said Monday afternoon. “The trailer is in good shape, and we’re glad to have it back for the kids.”

The trailer contained about 5,000 pounds of chalk that had been donated to PACE, which stands for Police Athletic Community Engagement. It was found north of 42nd and Harrison Streets in the parking lot of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Cabral said.

The trailer was taken between 12:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., Cabral said. “Someone probably saw the trailer and thought it looked pretty weighed down. They sawed through the lock on the hitch.

“Whoever took it, if it was kids, might have brothers and sisters that we’re trying to help,” Cabral said.

Anyone with information about the theft should contact Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP or at omahacrimestoppers.org. Tipsters remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward if they supply information that leads to an arrest.
