Meth Suspects Question Validity Of Jailhouse Informants

NEBRASKA CITY – The Otoe County District Court is being asked to decide new legal challenges after the search of a Nebraska City house and arrest of four people on methamphetamine charges. Police and a Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team served a search warrant at the home of Roy Chase at 413 Fourth Corso on Aug. 4, but a lawyer for Chase says the search was illegal because it did not have benefit of a valid warrant. Omaha attorney Kevin Ryan says police omitted important details when they asked a judge for a warrant to search the house. The details, Ryan said, include that three informants were in custody at the Otoe County jail when they gave police Chase's name. Ryan said a police affidavit does not give the judge corroborating evidence and fails  to establish that the reliability of the jail-house informants. Chase is scheduled for trial on Jan. 3 on a charge of distribution of methamphetamine. Also facing charges are 23-year-old Christian Hoefling, 35-year-old Michael Hord and 26-year-old Chelsea Sailors. Attorneys for Hoefling and Sailors have also filed affidavits challenging the validity of the search.
