Lot of New Faces as Wilber-Clatonia Begins Title Defense

WILBER – Last season was a major triumph for Wilber-Clatonia High School as they won their first state championship in school history. It was in big part thanks to a talented and large senior class.

“It was great. You know, when you win the state championship, that’s what you dream of, and we had a heck of a group of kids. We stayed healthy. We were fortunate and thinks worked out for us. We were able to pull it off and it doesn’t get better than that,” said Head Coach Lynn Jurgens.

It did leave them with a lot of question marks in 2017, though. With 15 seniors graduating from last year, Coach Lynn Jurgens is taking a little bit different approach.

“Yeah, we lost a ton. We lost a lot of big boys, a lot of big, athletic kids, and a lot of kids that are playing college football right now. Our identity is going to be a lot different this year. We’ve got kids that are working hard, though, and they know how to win. They want to win, but we’re probably going to have to go about it a little different way.”

All the Wolverines’ players still have the same mind set and goals as 2016, however.

“We’re still out here to try winning games. That’s what we want, that’s why we play. We’re out here hitting hard, getting better every day,” declared Senior Cooper Bates.

Wilber-Clatonia will host Sandy Creek in their first matchup of the season.
