The National Weather Service in Omaha has issued flash flood warnings due to levee failures in northeast Nemaha County, western Fremont County and southwestern Mills Counties.
Law enforcement reported two breaches in the levee on the Missouri River north of Peru on Saturday afternoon. This will cause rapidly rising water levels in the immediate areas. Officials say to “move to higher ground now to protect your life!”
On Saturday morning, Corps of Engineers reported at least two levee failures and a levee breach along the Iowa side of the Missouri River.
The first suspected breach is in Iowa across from Offutt Air Force Base. One suspected failure is a few miles south of Plattsmouth on the Iowa side. The other failure is also on the Iowa side across from Nebraska City.
Water will quickly fill up low lands behind the levees and will lead to rapidly rising water levels.
A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.
