OMAHA, NE (News Channel Nebraska) – A state lawmaker from Omaha is fed up with lousy living conditions in town and is demanding the city act now or he will.
Last summer an Omaha landlord was accused of renting apartments full of cockroaches, electrical problems, gas leaks and more.
Kay Anderson, who owns Yale Park apartments on the city’s north side, is charged with 100 city housing code violations.
Yale Park was shut down sending 500 tenants, all refugees, in 100 apartments looking for somewhere else to live.
Since that time, as News Channel Nebraska has reported, other dangerous, dirty and unhealthy apartments in town have also been exposed.
City officials say they are working on a new get-tough ordinance but State Senator Justin Wayne isn’t convinced and has his own bill which would require all rental units to be inspected at least once every three years.
The city says its too expensive and over-reaching.
Wayne’s put his bill on hold for a few weeks, giving the city a chance to solve the problem locally.
In the meantime, the owner of Yale Park is facing up to 50 years behind bars if convicted on all 100 counts.
He’s due in court March 4.
