NEBRASKA CITY – High school student-athletes across the country made their college commitments Wednesday during National Signing Day, including across southeast Nebraska, southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri.
Lourdes Central Catholic senior James Mason signed his letter of intent to play football at the University of Mary, a NCAA Division II school in Bismarck, ND.
Mason plans to study biochemistry and says the improvement and expansion of the health sciences department drew him to the school.
“I always wanted to go to a small catholic college, because my faith is a huge part of me. Once I found out that coach (Craig) Bagnell of U of Mary was hired, I thought it would be a great pick. College football is always something that has been in the back of my mind and seeing it become a reality, it’s just been huge for me. I love the campus, I love everything about that college, so I’m really excited to go there.”
Mason and his family, Tyler (dad), Kelly (mom) and Selah (sister), moved from South Carolina to Nebraska two years ago. During his two seasons with the Knights, Mason played several positions, including defensive back, running back, wide receiver and kicker. He plans to primarily focus on being a defensive back for the Marauders.
Mason finished his senior season with 73 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He also ran for 898 yards and 14 touchdowns as a running back. He caught 10 passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns.
