Girl’s Foot Injured Beneath Toppled Granite Panel

NEBRASKA CITY – Police are investigating a criminal mischief case involving the toppling of one of the granite panels of the school building memorial on the grounds of the Nebraska City Middle School.

Nebraska City rescue was called to the Middle School around 5 p.m. Thursday as the 750-pound panel had fallen on an 11-year-old girl’s foot.

A post on a Facebook  page says the girl required surgery, but is not expected to lose her foot.

Police say four juveniles are being questioned. A parent driving through the Middle School’s circle driveway told police she saw kids at the monument and took video with her phone. Police reviewed the video.

Police say one of the juveniles reported that they got the panel to rock and then it went over. Police say it is a case of intentional vandalism.

The girl’s foot was freed before police arrived. Her shoe remained beneath the panel, however, until Friday morning.

The rebar reinforcement goes the length of the panel, but was broken off about three inches from the pavement.

The Facebook posts says a strand of rebar and rubber solvent are not sufficient reinforcement for the panel.
