Get your popcorn ready: Bulldogs cage Tigers in sweep of district rival

AUBURN, Neb. – Auburn school officials offered free admission and popcorn to any Auburn student, grades 6-12, who attended Tuesday night’s basketball games vs. Falls City. And what a treat it was.

Bulldog fans packed Auburn High School to watch their girls and boys basketball teams sweep their Class C1-1 rivals.

Freshman Cameron Binder had a game-high 21 points and the boys team defeated the Tigers, 58-48. Senior Michael Lombardi added 10 points.

Auburn (5-6) began the game on a 10-0 run, before Falls City answered with a 10-2 run to close the opening period. The Bulldogs took a 40-29 lead into the fourth quarter. The Tigers trimmed the lead to six with 1:11 remaining, but Auburn used a 6-2 run to seal the victory.

Senior Brandt Chapple and sophomore Mason Crawford each had 13 points to lead Falls City (7-7). Chapple also had a breakaway slam in the third quarter.

Meanwhile in the girls game, Auburn (8-3) used a tantalizing full-court press to hold Falls City (4-10) to just three first half points, on their way to a 50-20 win.

Head Coach Grant Cole said it was a great effort defensively by everybody.

“We were able to set the tempo with our press. Also, I just loved our execution at half-court. Flex is always very, very difficult to guard and we did a great job executing our game plan in the half-court as well as that full-court pressure.”

Junior Ashley Teten finished with a game-high 19 points. The Bulldogs, ranked #10 in the latest News Channel Nebraska girls basketball rankings, went 17-21 from the free throw line.

Both Auburn teams will be on the road Friday at Fairbury. News Channel Nebraska will carry the girls and boys varsity contests on B103 (103.1 FM, b103.fm).

The Falls City girls and boys teams travel to Maryville, MO on Friday.
