NEBRASKA CITY – Arbor Day as a national holiday was highlighted Friday with a flag presentation at the Otoe County War Memorial.
A flag was presented to American Legion commander Carl Christensen to signify the post’s centennial.
Flags were presented to Gregg Goebel of the Otoe County Veterans Committee and Dustin Warren and Aaron Erickson of the Naval Operational Support Center.
A flag was also presented to NCTC staff, Amy Allgood, Pam Frana and Dana Stovall.
Natalie Turner sang the Star-Spangled Banner. Eagle Scout Mason Hamilton led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Keith Whitehead played Taps with echo by Katherine Luther.
Army veteran Shelley Ramage, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, spoke about April being the month of the child.
U.S. Navy Veteran Ron Roen was program master of ceremonies.
Roen: “It is a privilege to be in Nebraska City on Arbor Day because it originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The U.S. flag is on display at Arbor Lodge and across the nation on Arbor Day.
Other reasons our nation’s flag is displayed are because of the freedom we enjoy, out of respect for the American Legion Centennial in 2019 and Month of the Military Child in April.”
The ceremony included recognition of the POW/MIA table.
