E. Coli Bacteria Found in Unadilla’s Water Distribution System; Boil Water Notice in Effect

UNADILLA, Neb. - The Village of Unadilla detected E. coli bacteria in its distribution system and is warning residents to boil  water before using it. The boil water notice is in effect until further notice. Village official Corinne Zahn says they are distributed notices to the post office, bank and community center, and are in the process of hand-delivering flyers door-to-door. She hopes the notice will last for only a short-time. It is unknown how the E. coli bacteria entered the distribution system, but according to a release, the water may be contaminated with human or animal waste. This can happen due to a break in the distribution system or a failure in the water treatment process. "We found E. coli bacteria indicating the need to look for potential problems in the water treatment or distribution," the release said. "When this occurs, we are required to conduct an assessment to identify problems and to correct any issues that were found during these assessments." Do not drink the water without boiling first. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, dishes and food preparation. Boiling the water kills organisms. Officials continue to work to identify the source of the problem and return the water supply system to compliance. Stay with News Channel Nebraska for the latest.
