Class D1 Weeping Water Nearly Stuns Class C1 #10 Auburn

AUBURN, Neb. – The Auburn High School girls basketball team, ranked #10 in Class C1, had to use a 16-12 fourth quarter run to escape an upset bid from Class D1 Weeping Water Tuesday night at Auburn High School.

Junior Sydnie Reeves scored 11 points and senior Allie Binder added 10 and the Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the season with a 42-38 win. Binder went 6-8 at the free throw line in the final period. She finished 6-11.

Auburn head coach Grant Cole credits the Indians, who had the game tied after three quarters. Cole says Weeping Water took control of the game and set the tempo.

“We did not handle our composure once they started pressuring us. We attacked the basket early, we got some really good shots, but we missed layup after layup. We’re going to miss shots, but we have to keep our composure and keep our confidence at a high level.”

The Indians were led by the game-high 14 points from sophomore Peyton Barrett. Freshman Grace Cave chipped in 13.

Auburn travels to Falls City (0-1) on Thursday, while the Indians play another Class C1 team, at Boys Towns (0-3).

Meanwhile, Auburn senior Michael Lombardi had 15 points and the Auburn High School boys basketball team blew out Weeping Water, 61-30. Freshman Cameron Binder added 9 points on three three-pointers.

The Bulldogs held the Indians to single-digit scoring in every quarter, but the fourth.

Senior Marshall Garner led the Indians with 10 points.

Like the girls team, the Auburn boys begin a five-game road trip and will play at Falls City (1-0) on Thursday. Weeping Water will host Omaha Christian Academy (1-1) on Friday.
