AUBURN – Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos and NU Offensive Line Coach Greg Austin traveled to Auburn following their initial stop in Falls City Tuesday. The pair are a part of a two-day, 26-town barnstorming tour of the state that began Monday in the panhandle.
Austin, a former NU player, asked the nearly filled room at Arbor Manor why is it so important for fans to come to games.
“A fan is ‘a give and a give.’ Just like you come to see us, we need to make an effort to come back and reach back to see you, as well.”
Moos and Austin spoke for an hour about their journeys to the University of Nebraska, the culture they are building within the football program (both in the classroom and on the field), and the importance of players and coaches building trust in one another.
Moos learned real fast the fan base wants to know and have access to the Husker administration.
“I like being out with the people. I like talking about our future, what we’ve got and how important it is for all of you. Selfishly, I like these small towns. I feel at home. I’d like to grab a picnic basket and a bottle of wine and sit out in a pasture.”
Moos has been an advocate for adding former Big 8 foes to Nebraska’s non-conference schedule in the future. The Huskers play Colorado at home this season and in Boulder in 2019.
They will play their former conference rivals Oklahoma in 2021, the 50th anniversary of the “Game of the Century.” When asked how special it’ll be for the two teams to meet on the anniversary, Moos says “the first thing we’d like to do is beat them.”
“To have our program in a position where that is completely realistic. I think there’s a lot to say about scheduling non-conference games with our old brothers from the Big 8. Notice I didn’t say Big 12, I’ll leave that one alone.”
Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 45–38–3. The two teams have not played since the Sooners defeated the Huskers, 23-20, in the 2010 Big 12 Championship game.
The “Husker Nation Tour” continued through Plattsmouth on Tuesday afternoon. Nebraska begins the 2018 football season at home against Akron on Sept. 1.
