Battle Buddies Auction Builds Company Morale

NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City came together with the local National Guard unit on Saturday with a Grillin’ and Chillin’ event including burgers, split the pot and a “battle buddies” auction. The public was invited to bid on a pair of soldiers who had volunteered their personal time to help with whatever job the top bidder has. Cpt. Eric Otte and Lt. Grant Hewitt were among the volunteers. Otte: “The whole point of that was to build funds up so we can do things that would build morale and support our families within the unit, so we decided to volunteer and do this on our own time.” Heweitt: “The reason I volunteered is because the community here in Nebraska City has been great to us and it’s good to interact with them and try to give back to them in a way.” Auction winners plan to have them clean up the storage at the chamber office, spread mulch and other jobs.
