BBPS School Board Meeting 5-15-17

The Broken Bow school board met at 7:30 the evening of Monday, May 15. A presentation from Katie Custer, the district speech pathologist, concerning the MTSS program began the new business. MTSS stands for Multi-Tier System of Support and has programs in both the elementary and junior high schools. Custer reported on different programs MTSS has in the junior high including monthly grade-level team meetings. In a survey of school faculty, the program received support and praise of results, including fewer suspensions and fewer class failings.

Following comments from board members and administrators, discussion on the hot topic of the night began. Activities Director Ryan Hogue spoke about and presented pictures of deterioration of the track and presented four options of varying price-levels to repair the track. These included totally replacing the track with a more modern kind that will require very little maintenance over a long period of time for $550,000, performing maintenance on the current track and runways that is anticipated to last five to six years, replace only the runways and discuss replacing the track next year, or to do nothing. A debate followed and board member J.B. Atkins expressed the need for an economic analysis of hosting track meets to determine if hosting the events benefits the community enough to justify replacing the track. No decision was reached and the issue was tabled until the next work session, which will take place June 5 at 7:30pm.

Also tabled was the adoption of KSB Policies. The rest of the items on the agenda were approved, including a vote to join Nebraska United for Property Tax Reform and Education, the approval of the Alternative Education and North Park Elementary handbooks, Policy Section 200, the FBLA Trip, the resignation of Sarah Oltjenbruns, and the hirings of Elizabeth Zoucha, Cheyenne Rosentreader, and Kinsi Coleman.

A special meeting is scheduled for 7 pm on June 5 before the regularly scheduled board work session at 7:30.
